An indescribable joyous feeling flows through me when I reminisce the memories of that night: I was lying on the summit of a hill, in an abandoned village by the desert. I, a 16-year-old teenager, was embracing the stars. I was flying through the stars.

When one is enchanted by the beauty of stars, those gleaming stars might not exist any more. Alas, countless of them are dead and frozen by the time we are captivated by their magnificence. Their light is traveling billions of kilometers to reach our eyes. We are seeing a past state of the universe. And, as we look further, we witness an older state.

When we focus on the objects around us, the distance drops. Still, it takes a fraction of time for us to see those objects. The closer the objects, the closer we get to the present moment…

Until I reach to her eyes. When I am looking at her eyes, the time stops. The world around us is moving and evolving. However, she and I are floating through time and space in a static and ecstatic state. When I’m looking at her eyes, there isn’t any distance between us: we become one. As a result, every moment grows to be endless. I’m utterly certain if I have her eyes, I’m going to stay young and live forever.

“Higgs Boson Blues”

Higgs Boson particle — a.k.a the God particle — is a very fundamental particle that explains many things. It was discovered at CERN lab, Geneva, Switzerland. In the lyrics, this particle can be regarded as a metaphor for God. Blues refers to the Blues music and, at the same time, refers to sorrow. So, my interpretation of the title: The sad God.
Why God is sad?
———-

Can’t remember anything at all
Flame trees line the streets
Can’t remember anything at all
But I’m driving my car down to Geneva

He is driving his car to Geneva, where God (Boson Particle) was discovered. He’s on a pilgrimage to the land of God, Geneva. One can see god as a being that has the answers to everything; answers to all missing parts and the emptiness inside us, answers to all of our needs and all of our questions. Something that gives meaning to our suffering.
He is escaping from the hellish world with the hope to find a refuge in Geneva..
———-

I’ve been sitting in my basement patio
Aye, it was hot
Up above, girls walk past, the roses all in bloom
Have you ever heard about the Higgs Boson blues
I’m goin’ down to Geneva baby, gonna teach it to you

We can see two different sides in this world. The first side is sad and dark because you see beyond the meaningless cycle of everyday life. The bright and blooming side belongs to the people who are enjoying their superficial life in this modern and machinery world. Those who not seek meaning. This world is indeed the heaven. Unless, you eat the forbidden fruit, the fruit of the tree of knowledge. The moment you have your first bite from the tree of knowledge, you’re exiled from heaven to hell.
Back to lyrics, then he mentions the sad God. He wants to teach it to those people who are, meaninglessly, living up above. We’ll see his teachings in the reminder of the lyrics.

Who cares, who cares what the future brings?
Black road long and I drove and drove
I came upon a crossroad
The night was hot and black
I see Robert Johnson,
With a ten dollar guitar strapped to his back,
Lookin’ for a tune

Again, he mentions that the world is dark and that he is seeking a meaning and light in this darkness, by driving to Geneva (God’s place).
On his way, he sees Robert Johnson, which according to Eric Clapton was “the most important blues singer that ever lived”. There’s a myth about Johnson says he sold his soul to Lucifer in order to become a great blues musician. Johnson will meet Lucifer in order to make a deal:
———-

Well here comes Lucifer,
With his canon law,
And a hundred black babies runnin’ from his genocidal jaw
He got the real killer groove
Robert Johnson and the devil man
Don’t know who’s gonna rip off who

So here’s the confrontation of the Lucifer and Johnson. But in the Cave’s version of the story, Johnson is not going to sell his soul to the devil. Instead, there’s a fight between them. His miraculous music, for sure, is from something divine, from heaven. It is impossible to acquire divinity music from Lucifer.

It’s noteworthy to know that Johnson died because he drank a poisonous wine. Who poisoned the wine? A jealous husband whom Johnson flirted with his wife. Therefore one can say, after all, there was a fight between Lucifer and Johnson in real life. Lucifer finally killed him with the help of a temptation, and a jealous husband.

Driving my car, flame trees on fire
Sitting and singin’ the Higgs Boson blues,
I’m tired, I’m lookin’ for a spot to drop
All the clocks have stopped in Memphis now
In the Lorraine Motel, it’s hot, it’s hot
That’s why they call it the Hot Spot
I take a room with a view

Again, he sees the world as a dark hell. In many Biblical notes, hell described as a lake of dark fire.
He is driving and driving toward the place where some people claim they have discovered God.
Why the earth a dark hell? Here, he mentions one reason:
It was on this earth in Lorraine Motel at Memphis where Martin Luther King Jr., an innocent individual, a warrior of the light, who sought freedom and equality, bled to death.

Hannah Montana does the African Savannah
As the simulated rainy season begins
She curses the queue at the Zulus
And moves on to Amazonia
And cries with the dolphins
Mama ate the pygmy
The pygmy ate the monkey
The monkey has a gift that he is sending back to you
Look here comes the missionary
With his smallpox and flu
He’s saving them savages
With his Higgs Boson Blues
I’m driving my car down to Geneva
I’m driving my car down to Geneva

Here we see a comparison between the superficial meaningless modern world and the sad reality. Hannah Montana might be the best symbol of the corporate-created shallow celebrity. She superficially mimics the African rain dance; what is the result? A meaningless simulated rain. She cries for the dolphins. But they are fake as crocodile tears. This modern life, which she is the very symbol of, is the main reason for dolphins’ death.

Next, he focuses on how AIDS firstly created because of poverty of the  people of Africa. Then he mentions how missionaries in Australia killed many indigenous people (or savages in the eyes of the missionaries) with smallpox and flu. The irony is that the missionaries claimed that they are saving the indigenous people by introducing God to them, but they introduced illness and death to them. This is another question to be asked from God. So he’s driving to Geneva to ask him: “why?”

Maybe this newly discovered God could offer a solution to all the madness that surrounds us.
———-

Oh let the damn day break
The rainy days always make me sad
Miley Cyrus floats in a swimming pool in Toluca Lake
And you’re the best girl I’ve ever had
Can’t remember anything at all

And again, happy people up above are swimming in their pool. They don’t care about the sad part of the world. But who he sees the darkness, crimes, and inhumanity, and, cares, belongs to the dark basement, down here.
Let’s drive to Geneva.
Who knows, maybe we can find some answers over there,
maybe we can change something
Let’s drive to Geneva….
